Dokra Craft Takes Center Stage India's Inaugural Museum Unveiled in Dhenkanal
India's inaugural Dokra museum is set to be established in the crafts village of Sadeibereni-Nabajibanpur, located under the jurisdiction of Saptasajya panchayat and Sadar block within the Dhenkanal district. As part of this initiative, there are also plans to create a Dokra Library and Research Center at this site, aiming to support the preservation and growth of the endangered Dokra handicraft specific to Dhenkanal.
Notably, researchers and experts specializing in handicrafts will be deployed to the museum to guide artisans in the application of advanced technologies and to facilitate the exchange of ideas for creative problem-solving. Roopa Roshan Sahoo, the Commissioner and Secretary of the state ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Research Department, has officially announced that the state government will extend crucial financial and technical assistance for this pioneering project.
Sadeibereni-Nabajibanpur harbors a sizable community of Dokra artisans, and the identification of craft villages seeks to promote the rich heritage of handmade traditional artifacts, which have garnered a distinctive identity at both the state and national levels. The district administration is currently executing phased infrastructure development within the crafts village, and proposals have been solicited. Upon receiving these proposals, dedicated teams will be dispatched to take strategic measures aimed at further promoting various crafts, like Dokra.
The anticipated establishment of India's first Dokra Museum and Research Center is poised to enhance tourist engagement, providing a substantial economic boost to the local community. Commissioner Sahoo underscored that this development is expected to have direct and indirect benefits for the artisans involved.
